Comprehensive insurance, or as it called in some states, “other than collision” is a useful coverage for any driver. Comprehensive insurance covers damages to your vehicle as a result of events out of your control. Examples of such events include vandalism, theft, fire, weather, damage from accidents with animals, and other accidents. Comprehensive is an optional coverage and needs to be added to your Auto Insurance policy. Accidents covered by comprehensive insurance include the following:

  • Vandalism, riots, fire, and explosions
  • Theft
  • Falling trees, tree limbs, and other falling objects
  • Storm, wind, hail, lightning, flood, and earthquake
  • Rocks or other objects kicked up by cars
  • Accidents involving animals

Since all drivers might encounter the above mentioned risks, comprehensive coverage is a useful addition to have for any driver. Comprehensive coverage may be confused with collision. Both are protecting your car in the event of accidents, but these two policies cover different types of damages. While comprehensive protects you in the events out of your control, collision protects you in the event of car accidents or collision with an object.
